As you stroll through our Vikings Hall, listen for the caws of Odin’s ravens, Huginn (“thought” in Old Norse) and Muninn (“memory” or “mind” in Old Norse), as they return from their travels in Midgard (which you know as “Earth”), with news and information for their master, the great, one-eyed god, Odin. You might find them perched beside the great god himself, or poised for flight on a magic knot, or even resting among blossoms, encircled by the branches of a tree. Whenever you see these great birds, or hear their caws, you will know that you have entered the world of the ancient Vikings: a world in which Thor wields his great hammer, Mjölnir, as he rides in a chariot pulled by his two goats, Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr, and rains thunder and lightening down upon the heads of his enemies. In this world, the Valkyries—the female “choosers of the slain”—decide who will die in battle and who will live, and then choose which slain warriors they will escort to Valhalla, the afterlife hall of the slain, ruled over by the god Odin. Here, the Valkyries will serve mead to the deceased warriors, now einherjar (“single” [or once] fighters” in Old Norse), when the einherjar are not preparing to fight alongside the gods at Ragnarök. These beautiful females also appear in the old tales as the lovers of heroes and other mortal men, however. So, gentlemen, do not be surprised if they smile down on you as you gaze upon their lovely faces.

Should you lose your way in this world (or even in your own world!), look for the vegvísir, and carry it with you when you go, for in the ancient, Icelandic, Huld Manuscript, it is promised that “If this sign is carried, one will never lose one’s way in storms or bad weather, even when the way is not known.” Choose your path carefully here, however, for Ragnarök, the greatest battle of the Viking world, rages here still! As the gods Odin, Thor, Tyr, Freyr, Heimdallr, and Loki fight for their lives, and for the existence of the world itself, hide yourselves in the great world tree, Yggdrasil, and petition the gods and goddesses to allow you to survive the conflagration along with Líf (“life” or “life of the body” in Old Norse) and her lover, Lífprasir (“Líf’s lover” or “lover of life” in Old Norse), whom legend claims survived Ragnarök by hiding in the wood called Hoddmímis holt. Best of luck to you, and may the blessings of the gods be with you!
