Here we have a stunning, highly-detailed portrait of the goddess Freya, whose name in Old Norse means “Lady.” The two magical cats who pull her chariot sit beside her, as both her boar, Hildisvíni, and a falcon look on. In her cloak of falcon feathers—which allows its wearer to fly, usually in the form of a falcon—Freya’s pose highlights her role as “the first chooser of the slain,” the goddess of war and death who keeps half of the slain in her own hall. Yet, this magnificent and magical, heirloom-quality, work of art—carved with the blessings of the gods—also beautifully captures Freya in her roles as a goddess of love, beauty, sex, fertility, and sorcery.
